What in the world is commitment?

Galatians 5: 1, For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. [1]

What is standing firm? It means being committed. What in the world is commitment? What does it mean to be committed to something anything? Definition of Commitment: the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc.; an engagement or obligation that restricts freedom of action.

So, the question must be asked what are you committed too? Are you committed to your job? Are you committed to your family? Are you committed to your marriage? Are you committed to your City, State, or Nation? Are you committed to Jesus?

How many would stay at a job if another job opened up and it was more pay, more benefits, more time off? Most if not all of us would probably jump at the chance. We would barely have time to tell our old boss bye before running out the door.

Are you committed to your marriage? Well, I could say that many are committed to their marriage. However, the truth is that divorce is now over 50% and going higher each year. Excuses range from you no longer complete me, I don’t love your anymore, I have found someone else. The list could go on and on. Yet, then you have the man whose wife has suffered a stroke and she can’t feed herself or control her bodily functions and there he sits. He sits next to her bed reading the bible to her. He talks to her about their children. He feeds her. He changes her when she needs changing. He gives her a bath. There is a man who understands commitment. There are also many women I have known who do the same for their disabled husbands.

Are you committed to Jesus? Many say, “Oh, yes, I believe in Jesus”. Their lips move but their hearts, hands, and feet don’t. They profess their faith loud and long but when Sunday morning comes around there are so many things that need to be done. There are games to watch, kids to take to various sports who now schedule their games on Sunday because, well, just because, why not there is nothing important going on is there? Others say, “I believe and it doesn’t matter if I go to church does it?” or “I don’t need to be committed to Jesus, do I?”.

Commitment to anything but God is fine. Being committed to sports, to vacation, to fun things, to a life of self-fulfillment, all these are fine to be committed to but not God or worship of Him.

Jesus was fully committed to you. Jesus was so committed to you that He laid down His life for you. Jesus suffered pain, torture, and being nailed to a cross for you. That is giving us an example of commitment. I read this somewhere, “In a breakfast of bacon and eggs. The chicken was involved but the pig was committed”.

Jesus showed us what commitment looks like as He gave His all for you and me. I pray that you will see Jesus’ commitment to you and commit to live a life of commitment to Him. Take the time out of your busy lives to live a life of commitment to Jesus and one another in the House of the Lord. God Bless you all.
